our background

The Big Local programme is an experiment in resident-led decision making. It gives 150 communities in England at least £1 million each, and allows them the freedom to decide how the money is spent. The Big Local programme is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and managed by Local Trust.

our impact

A car park that felt unsafe for many residents to walk through at night has been replaced by CRATE, a thriving hub for small businesses, community activities, and social entrepreneurs.

the area

Nestled in the heart of the city, St James Street Area is home to a diverse community of approximately 7,800 residents. This dynamic neighborhood boasts a rich cultural tapestry, with over half of its inhabitants hailing from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and EU accession countries, creating a vibrant blend of traditions and perspectives.

Despite its vitality, this community faces unique challenges. There are higher levels of unemployment, particularly among the younger population, and a significant 25.7% of children live in families with limited income. However, the residents demonstrate commendable resilience, actively participating in various sectors such as retail, healthcare, education, and social work. While the area's crime rate is above average, concerted efforts are being made to enhance safety and cultivate a sense of belonging.

With its proximity to essential services and an ongoing commitment to improvement, St James Street Area is poised to evolve into an even more inclusive and thriving neighborhood. This community exemplifies the strength that arises from embracing diversity and working together towards a common goal.

In our final year, we will work with support from the Local trust (the charity which oversees the Big Local) to gain a better understanding of how our work is making a difference in our local community. This will involve in-depth interviews with our grant recipients, and surveys of local residents.
