We are pleased to announce the start of an exciting new project to be created by internationally renowned street artist, Phlegm, who has been commissioned to design a mural on the wall of the international supermarket. His fantastic design, seen here, depicts the triplane developed by Edwardian engineer, Alliott Verdon Roe. The plane was created under the railway arches in Walthamstow Marshes, from where Alliott also made his first all-British powered flight. The picture links the almost forgotten aviation history of Walthamstow marshes with Phlegm’s love of tri-planes. As a gateway to the marshes, the picture also perfectly complements ATM’s beautiful bird mural opposite.

The project is the culmination of consultations held with St James Street residents during the first phase of the Big Local project. Residents fed back that they would like to see more art work in the area and our initial artist’s brief attracted a wide response from both local and international designers. A panel made up of the Leader of the Council, representatives from local charity, the Mill, local businesses, a local historian and the St James Street Big Local made the final decisions and we are thrilled to have Phlegm on board.

Phlegm was born in North Wales and has worked across the world. Since he emerged on the scene, he has gained international recognition and is one of the most admired street artists across the world. His street art is very exciting and highly recognisable. He believes that a painting in the street becomes a part of the cities architecture and is influenced by what’s around it as opposed to being an awkward canvas in an art gallery. One of his most famous projects sits in Toronto where, in August 2016 (and at a height of eight storeys), he painted what is billed as the world’s tallest mural.

The first part of Phlegm’s project starts next week when the wall gets rendered and prepared for painting. Phlegm himself then gets to work on his creation from the 19th February. We can’t wait to unveil this fantastic piece of work to you!
